For my Internship Project I decided that I decided that something that would be beneficial to the company was to organize their parts drawers and shelves, i wanted to do this becasue while i have been working at lucra if i was told to go find a certain time of nut or bolt or if i even saw someone looking for a certain time of bolt it would take a pretty long time to find what you needed and its exact size, so i thought that i would be a good idea to go to the most used shelves and organize them and put the right parts where they are supposed to be as well as making labels on each of the bins so that you can easily walk up to the shelve and find the correct bin easily instead of having to dig through a bunch of bags or eyeballing something and hoping that it fits.
this process was a very teadius task for me because i had to make sure that where each bin was labeled it had all of the correct parts inside of it, on top of that if there were just raw bolts or nuts or screws laying in the bin i had to find out what they were called and what size they were so that i could correctly name them and put them where they belong.

this internship at lucra has really shown me what the everyday life of working in a car shop is like. Before going into this internship I had little experience with hands on working on cars and using different tools, or even what it was like to work everyday in a shop with other people but after four weeks straight i have gained so much knowledge about it and it has really made me think even more about taking automotive technologies classes in college and maybe even trying to get a degree in engineering,
I am still not certain if I would want to work on just cars or if i would like to maybe even branch out with mechanical engineering and seeing what other jobs look like that are in the same type of trade. one thing that is for sure though is that I definitely do want to go to college and take some sort of engineering class whether it is mechanical engineering or just automotive tech. if I ultimately do decide on joining a branch of the military I would definitely think about joining and doing an engineering job in it. Working at Lucra has been an eye opening experience for me and I will always remember it Through out my time working at lucra I have been tasked with multiple different tasks/jobs around the shop and most of them involved on doing various things to various cars while other things that i did (while there was nothing to work on) was clean up the shop, the images below are some of the cars that I had worked on. In this Picture It shows the Sun Beam tiger that i helped wet sand and buff the new paint job and started to put on the hood, doors, trunk, and the chrome trip around the sides. The car has been in the paint booth for about 4 weeks now and was finally finished and ready for work. This picture shows when I put the right side door back onto the car and started to install the window mechanism and door latch system inside of the door. This is a picture i took after i was done helping with cleaning up the engine bay and seeing if all of the correct wires and tubes were hooked up in the correct places. When the car was finally out of the paint booth we pushed it out into the main portion of the shop where we were to start working on the interior and wiring. This is an after picture of when the chrome bumpers and grill were installed as well as headlight housing and headlights. Here is another after photo of the rear bumper and tail lights and luggage rack installed. This picture was taken right after i had uninstalled the radiator heat-sink and fan from a land rover defender so we could fix leaks and replace some components These photos are before and after photos of when we got done painting the main frame of a defender and when we finally got the engine ready to be installed and when it finally got installed and was on the lift so we could start to work on the break lines. This is a 110 cm frame of a land rover defender that we finally got back into the shop after we had sent it to go get sand blasted and re-welded Here is a photo of what one half of the shop looks like and what cars were and are in it today and what we have been working little by little on. since the Sun Beam was moved out of the paint booth the owner of the Lamborghini who is also a very rich pilot sent in his plane to get re painted which will be started very soon. Those were just a few of the many projects that i have worked on in the past 3 weeks. This is the jensen interceptor that was built for and used in the Fast and Furious 6 movie. This is the new motor that will soon be going into the Lamborghini countach
My work as as an intern was very meaningful to my education because so far it has taught me so much about engineering and what being a mechanic is like and how to properly work on various types of vehicles and also how keeping a business running strong and how to charge customers so that they get a fair price and the company still makes a good profit.
i measured my level of success with everything that i worked on by making sure that it was all perfect and the way it needed to be and or properly installed and having my intern or someone else at the shop to come by and check it to make sure that everything was in place and ready to be given back to the customer or ready to go onto its next stage in the build. something that i learned to appreciate very much is patients and to not get frustrated very easily because when we are working on an old car and something isn't going the way it should be going and a part wont come off for what ever reason or we just don't know to do something, we have to have the patients to figure it out and we cant just give up on it and walk away because if you try hard enough for a long enough time it always will be figured out. this internship has made a big influence on my life and with the direction i want to take it in because i now know that i do have a strong passion for working in the automotive industry and that learning all of these new skills and trades can and will be super beneficial to me in the future and overall has just proven to me that i do love working with cars. I have have advocated for my self almost everyday that i have worked at lucra and with just about everything that i have worked on because every project there is worth up to several hundred thousand dollars so i am always wanting to make sure that I am doing something correctly so that I dont mess up and end up ruining one of the cars,
My intern ship project hasn't been working on just one thing i have been slowly working on several different cars and doing various things to them like restoring and painting and rebuilding.
my plan for doing this is to learn as much as i can from everyone at the workplace so that I will be able to be assigned to work on something on my own with one of the cars and make it closer to its final form of being complete Some of the skills i will need to do this is basic power tool knowledge, learn how to properly paint a car and clear coat it, welding and machine work. i will need the help from everyone in the workplace that i can get it from and have them teach me how to do all of these things and more so that I do it correctly the first time and wont have to restart what ever i was working on. something that strikes me most about my work place is how layed back everything is there are not really any small little rules that you have to follow and everyone no matter what job title they have all works together on the same things.
all of my work colleagues are very close together and have worked with each other for a long time so they are all very good friends and help each other out and don't really separate them selves from each other very much. and everyone there is willing to help you out or teach you if you ask them. what strikes me most about the job that i'm doing is how much i am aloud to do i entered this internship hoping that i would be able to work on cars but was thinking that i wouldn't be aloud to but it turns out that i am and i can get very hands on with everything. i am excited to see all or most of the cars that i got to help put together and restore finally drive out of the shop. and what i am most worried about is accidentally scratching an expensive car and then losing the privilege to work on that car. A typical work day at Lucra is not usually routine, the beginning of the day you go to work and what ever car needs to be worked on ( in my case it is a Lamborghini ) you will look at the list of things that need to be done to the vehicle that's usually in the window, I had the task of pushing the car outside and begin to strip out all of the frame paint down to the primer so the car could slowly begin to be ready for its new engine and paint job. every day it will be something like this except with less paint removing.
The general work policies are pretty simple if you are late it doesn't really matter as long as it's not more than a few hours because there aren't tasks assigned to certain people, everyone kind of just works on what needs to be worked on the most. For the dress code, there really is none, there is little to no dress code and can wear what ever you want as long as you don't care if it gets dirty all though you don't really want to be wearing a formal suit to a shop where you will probably be getting oily and dirty while working on an engine or laying on the ground. Although our school doesn't have engineering classes I was able to use the makers space in many of my projects. While using the makers space I was able to experience how to weld and use other power tools. Without this experience at High Tech High, I would have been behind in my internship and would not have been able to use the power tools with the cars. |
